Types of Studies
A. Standard Polysomnography
CPT 95810
Most studies are of this type to rule out or confirm a suspected diagnosis, (e.g. sleep apnea, REM behavior disorder, periodic limb movement disorder, etc.).
Split-night Polysomnography is typically carried out when evidence of obstructive sleep apnea is seen in the first two - four hours of a study. CPAP therapy is then administered for the remainder of the study. Diagnostic and treatment criteria established by Medicare are followed.
- Electroencephalogram
- Electrooculogram
- Electromyogram
- Electrocardiogram
- Right and left leg EMG
- Nasal/oral airflow
- Thoracic respiratory effort
- Abdominal respiratory effort
- Snoring
- SaO2
- Heart rate
- Video monitoring

B. Polysomnography with CPAP
CPT 95811
This is an entire night spent titrating an effective positive airway pressure. This procedure is typically ordered when:
- There was insufficient time or data collected to allow for Split-night Polysomnography during an initial sleep study on a sleep apnea patient.
- A patient who is already on CPAP experiences continued or renewed daytime hypersomnolence, and minor CPAP pressure increases have not alleviated the symptoms.
C. Multiple Sleep Latency Testing
CPT 95865
This is a daytime test consisting of a series of nap opportunities. This is used in the diagnosis of narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia.
